The Ghost of It All was an exhibition created by Molly English and Mark Anthony Brown Jr during their time as participants of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Emerging from their engagement with the items and energies on the the top floor of Hilltop Antiques—a doctor’s office turned resale shop in Skowhegan, ME—the project brought new assemblages into dialogue with the store’s existing arrangements. The shop’s wares, composed of discarded agricultural and domestic objects spanning the past century and earlier, became material for re-examination and reflection. From the accumulation of these abandoned things, English and Brown drew out moments of confrontation, inviting visitors to navigate the shop’s maze-like passages as spiritual grottos, considering the lingering materialities, histories, and meanings they carry.
